Privacy and comfort are incredibly important when you’re working in a photography or video studio, particularly when shoots involve outfit changes, models, presenters or content that requires a little more discretion.
At Whites Hire Studio, we’re always looking for small ways to make the studio easier, safer and more comfortable to use. That has led us to create our own simple Studio Privacy system.
Privacy in a small studio
We’re a relatively compact studio, and while we’d love to have a completely separate changing room, there simply isn’t enough space to create one without taking valuable room away from the main shooting area.
In practice, this has never been a major problem. When someone needs to change, photographers, assistants and other members of the team will normally step outside of the studio and give them complete privacy.
But we wanted to make that process a little clearer.
So, naturally, we built an app for it.

Introducing our Studio Privacy system
Our Studio Privacy app gives the person inside the studio control over a simple status display.
When someone is changing, the display can show a clear “Do Not Enter” message. Once they’re ready, they can change the status to let the photographer or crew outside know that it’s OK to come back in.
There’s no knocking on the door, shouting through it or wondering whether it’s safe to enter.
It’s a very simple idea, but sometimes those are the things that make a studio feel more comfortable to use.
Useful for photography and filming
Although the original idea came from photographers and models needing privacy while changing, the system is useful for video production too.
For example, during filming we can display messages such as:
-
On Air
-
Recording
-
Do Not Enter
-
OK to Enter
This can help prevent interruptions when recording interviews, podcasts, videocasts, social media content or other productions where an unexpected door opening isn’t ideal.
What about the studio security camera?
We also have a security camera installed in the studio. This is there for security when the studio isn’t being used.
However, the camera is linked to our booking calendar and is automatically switched off during studio bookings.
We think that’s an important distinction.
When you’ve booked the studio, the space is yours to work in, and your privacy during that time is extremely important to us.
Small improvements make a difference
The Studio Privacy system isn’t a huge addition to the studio, but it’s exactly the type of thing we like to introduce.
We use the studio ourselves, we watch how photographers, videographers and clients use the space, and when we spot something that could work a little better, we try to improve it.
Sometimes that’s new lighting or equipment. Sometimes it’s changing the studio layout. And occasionally it’s building a little bit of technology specifically for the studio.
Most importantly, we’re always open to suggestions.
If you’ve used Whites Hire Studio and have an idea that could make the space better, easier or more comfortable to work in, we’d genuinely love to hear it.
We’re constantly developing the studio, one small improvement at a time.
